The internet splits this into two camps: you must eat the second you rack the last set, or you must train fasted if you want fat loss. Neither rule holds up after 50. Both eating before and eating after can work. What usually tanks progress is missing daily protein, or walking into a hard session empty enough that the session falls apart.
Does a 30-Minute Window Decide Muscle After 50?
No. The so-called anabolic window is wider than a gym-floor timer, and total protein does more of the work than the stopwatch.
A 2013 review of nutrient-timing studies concluded that the post-workout "window" is not a 30-minute cliff, and that how close protein needs to sit to training depends on when you last ate (Aragon and Schoenfeld, 2013, Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, PMID 23360586). Train after a real meal and amino acids are still in circulation. Train after an overnight fast and the next protein feeding matters because you have gone hours without protein, not because a magic hour expired.
A meta-analysis of 20 strength trials (478 people) and 23 hypertrophy trials (525 people) found that once total daily protein was in the model, timing protein immediately around the workout did not reliably beat eating it at other times of day. Total protein was the strongest predictor of the hypertrophy effect (Schoenfeld, Aragon and Krieger, 2013, Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, PMID 24299050). The trials mixed ages. The "eat now or lose the session" claim still failed.

Daily totals still sit above that one meal. Carbohydrate next to the session is a performance tool, not a hypertrophy law. Twenty to 40 g, 30 to 90 minutes before a hard lift, can keep the session from fading if you train early or get lightheaded. Skip a large, high-fat meal in the 20 minutes before squats.
When Does Eating Before the Workout Help?
When session quality is the thing you would otherwise lose.
You can train fasted and still grow if the rest of the day covers protein. After 50, the more common failure is a weak first hour: dizziness, a pounding heart on warm-up sets, or cutting the last working sets because the tank is empty. That is a skipped stimulus, not a fat-loss win.
Eat 30 to 90 minutes before if you train early and feel shaky empty, if the session is heavy compounds, or if a big breakfast sits badly. If training and meals interact with blood-pressure or blood-sugar medication, ask the clinician who prescribed it.
